From Milk to Memory: What Really Happens When We Make Breastmilk Jewelry

Breastmilk jewelry has become one of the most meaningful ways to honor the journey of motherhood. But if you’ve ever wondered what actually happens between sending in your milk and receiving your finished necklace or ring, this post will give you a behind-the-scenes look.

We value transparency because it helps you feel confident trusting us with what matters most, and it shows you the why behind each step.

Why Breastmilk Jewelry Matters Beyond the Moment

Most jewelry is purchased because of its beauty or symbolism. The same is true for breastmilk jewelry, BUT it also holds a piece of you, a piece of your journey. It captures what your body was able to do, your strength, and your bond with your child. It is something you can carry daily, not hidden away in a box or a drawer. Breastmilk rings and necklaces are a reminder of everything you poured into motherhood.

But here’s the part most brands skip over: what you’re really investing in is not just a piece of jewelry, but the process that turns fragile materials (like milk, cord, or hair) into something that lasts for generations.

Step 1: Preserving the Milk (Or Other Inclusions)

When your milk arrives, it doesn’t go straight into a ring or pendant. The first step is preservation.

  • The breastmilk is carefully labeled with your name, your order number, date it was received, and your order details.
  • A portion of your breastmilk is poured into our specialized preservation packaging and chemical preservatives are added.
  • Your milk then undergoes a mechanical preservation process where the milk gets converted into a powder-like substance.
  • Every mamma’s milk looks slightly different: some are creamier, some are whiter, some have a golden tint. That’s normal—and part of what makes each stone one-of-a-kind.

Step 2: Creating the Stone

Once your milk is preserved, it’s carefully mixed with our jewelry-grade resin blend. This special formula is made to last, unlike UV resin which often deteriorates in a short period of time.

  • This mixture is poured into the bezel of your chosen ring, pendant, earrings, or bracelet.
  • You can choose to add shimmers, flakes, or even other inclusions (like hair, cord, ashes, or florals).
  • We add about 3-4 layers to each piece to protect your keepsake and inclusions. These layers do contain UV protectant materials, not to be confused with UV resin.
  • Each stone takes about 7 days to cure until it fully hardens creating a durable, heirloom quality piece reflective of your journey.
  • If at any point in the process, we notice a little dust fleck or a craftsmanship issue, we RESTART the whole resin process. We don’t send out pieces that are less than perfect.

Step 3: Setting & Craftsmanship

After curing, the finished jewelry piece is then carefully inspected with a high-quality magnifier to ensure quality meets our standards.

  • We use solid metals like sterling silver, 14k gold (rose, white, and yellow), and even platinum for our stackers—so your piece holds up beautifully over time.
  • Your keepsakes are then carefully cleaned, polished, and packed by hand.

Your breastmilk jewelry is heirloom-quality fine, jewelry you’ll be proud to wear daily.

More Than Milk: Other Ways Mothers Customize

Not every keepsake starts with milk. Some mammas choose:

  • Umbilical cord (to remember the earliest connection) Petite Butterfly Charm with preserved ashes in a warm-toned, high-shimmer setting — a dainty, heartfelt memorial keepsake. Love Drop Ring with side stones featuring umbilical cord and birthstone tree of life — symbolizing new life and motherhood.
  • Ashes (to hold love and loss in the same piece)
Glowing Halo Pendant with ashes and black shimmer, surrounded by cubic zirconia stones — a luminous tribute to everlasting love. •	Full Moon Pendant with tree of life design, incorporating pink florals, hair, and ashes — a keepsake honoring both life and loss.
  • Hair (a curl from baby’s first haircut, or a strand from a loved one)
  • Flowers (petals from weddings to birth bouquets or even from memorial services)
Petite Full Moon Pendant with dried florals and gold flakes — a miniature keepsake rich in texture and color. •	Full Moon Earrings with preserved breastmilk and scattered pink and yellow florals — subtle, sentimental jewelry for everyday wear.

Breastmilk jewelry is really just a doorway to something bigger: custom memorial and milestone jewelry. It’s about honoring the story that matters most to you.

Why This Process Is Worth Trusting

You may see cheaper options online, but shortcuts often mean stones that crack, fade, or yellow within months.

At Mamma’s Liquid Love, we’ve created over 27,000 keepsakes for mothers around the world. Over the last 10 years, we’ve refined and perfected our process to ensure your story lasts:

  • Materials are preserved using methods proven to stand the test of time.
  • Every stone is made one-at-a-time by hand, never mass-produced.
  • Every inclusion is treated like it’s priceless—because we were once nursing mammas and we know it is.

Final Thoughts: A Story That Outlives the Phase

One day, your child might hold your necklace in their hands and ask, 'Is this really from when I was a baby?' And you’ll smile and say yes, because it holds your story, your journey, your love. A piece of you they can carry, even long after they've grown.

One day, this jewelry will mean just as much to them as it means to you now.
